Medical Insurance

The University of Illinois system has negotiated a policy for all its campuses with Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (AJG). The AJG policy is designed for students, faculty, and staff who are going abroad for study, research, or other official UIC business.

For students applying to go abroad through the Study Abroad Office, coverage through the AJG international health insurance is mandatory. The cost of the AJG policy will be billed to your student account upon registration for your term abroad (May 1st for summer programs, July 1st for fall programs, December 1st for spring programs). Participants on a faculty-directed program will have the cost of the AJG policy included in their program fee. For all other students, please view the “Costs” tab below for more information on the amount you will be billed.

Please note that this international health insurance policy is not eligible to waive CampusCare while you are abroad. You are still required by UIC to be covered by domestic major medical health insurance while abroad. If you have questions about this, please talk to your study abroad advisor or contact CampusCare at 1 (312) 996 4915, option 3.

Important Note for Students Participating in a Partnership or Faculty-Directed Program:
In order to be eligible for CampusCare you must be charged UIC tuition and mandatory fees. Students participating in a partnership or faculty-directed program are not charged UIC tuition and mandatoruy fees, therefore, they are not eligible for CampusCare coverage. If your study abroad program begins later or ends earlier than UIC’s term and you need doemstic insurance coverage, you will need to coordiante coverage independently.

Faculty and staff whose travel is funded by the university or on university connected business are required to enroll in the AJG policy for the duration of their travel at no expense to the faculty or staff member. See below for enrollment details.

Independent travel outside of your official program dates (e.g. extended stay or early arrivals) is not covered by the university policy. The AJG policy also does not cover accompanying family members who are not dependents, or friends not traveling on university business. For these situations, AJG offers an alternate policy. Information can be accessed here.

UIC recommends that all travelers consider purchasing Cancellation & Interruption For Any Reason (CFAR/IFAR) insurance for domestic and international trips. CFAR/IFAR insurance can help protect your investment in your trip in the event the trip is cancelled before departing or interrupted during a trip for any reason, including the threat or fear of COVID-19.
There are several CFAR/IFAR insurance options available online to choose from. One option for a CFAR/IFAR insurance policy that provides at least 75% reimbursement coverage for CFAR/IFAR benefits is available below. While you are free to purchase CFAR/IFAR coverage from any provider, our preferred provider is through Travel Insured International. You can view their offerings here on UICs custom webpage. The information below is specific to the CFAR/IFAR insurance option listed on the hyperlink above. UIC has vetted the option above through our broker, Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., as a comprehensive solution that provides 75% reimbursement for CFAR/IFAR claims.

CFAR/IFAR insurance will cover:

  • A percentage of your program fees, housing, and flights if your program is canceled or you withdraw from the program for any reason if these expenses are non-refundable.
  • CFAR/IFAR insurance will not cover: any program fees, housing, or flights that are refunded through your program, housing, or airline as a result of a trip interruption or cancellation.

As you consider purchasing CFAR/IFAR insurance, make sure you know the following:

  • What is and is not covered – specifically in relation to COVID-19 and pandemics since not all CFAR/IFAR insurance policies cover COVID-19 or pandemic diseases
  • Your airline’s flight cancellation refund policy
  • Your program’s cancellation and refund policies
  • The terms of your housing contract, the cost of housing, and when deposits and expenses are owed for your housing

Ready to enroll in CFAR/IFAR insurance?
For the option offered through Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., travelers must enroll in CFAR/IFAR insurance within 21 days of receiving a non-refundable bill for a coverable expense. Make sure you know when important payment due dates for your program are including any potential program deposits, program fee payments, housing deposits, and airfare payments will be made.
